Snack Man – to the rescue!

A couple, kicking and slapping each other, back and forth, making fools of themselves on a NY Subway train sounds like a great topic for a blog. What would you do if you saw this?

No doubt it would make you uncomfortable, perhaps agitated, frustrated, or angry. Maybe you would fear that their fight would spread out, causing a riot. Would you jump in to save the woman from her boyfriend/husbands attack, even if she was clearly guilty of bad behavior as well?

If a bystander were to react with violence what do you think would happen? Experience tells me that a heated situation would only become more violent – almost defiantly leading to further victims.

While snacking on a tray of nacho chips & cheese, Charles, one of the bystanders, nonchalantly wanders into the center of the feuding couple. Showing zero trace of aggression, even giving the air of being completely oblivious, his act forces the couple to calm down.

Passenger’s breaths sigh of relief. Slappy-pants wife huffs, while kick-butt-husband runs a frustrated hand through his hair. He’s unsure of how to respond.

“Experts” say that most humans don’t want to fight. Sometimes, even in the midst of an altercation, they look for a way out. Charles gave them that out. He did not further stripe them of their dignity, which would have defiantly caused their ego to retaliate. So he is the newest member to my hero page.

Way to go snack man! And when I get further info about you I will amend my post.

  1. After sleeping on this story I realized that I have to give kudos to the fueding couple as well. They recognized that they were being offered help and they took it. I want to say thank-you for understanding your mistake, and not making the situation worse. You are much wiser for it!
